Chinese scientists say: chemicals extracted from cigarette butts can be used to protect steel pipes from rusting
A study published in the journal ACS Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research found that 4.5 trillion cigarette butts each year to plague the environment. The remains of cigarettes but can be reused to prevent corrosion of the steel type N80, widely used in the petroleum industry. Researchers have shown that nicotine, through this type of steel is protected from rust even in difficult conditions. Around 4.5 trillion of these remnants find their way into the environment every year.
Capable of surviving up to 15 years in the sea, cigarette ends contain chemicals that are toxic to many forms of fish.
Now researchers in China say they have found a novel use for these chemicals that could make the recycling of cigarette butts financially worthwhile.
China is the country with the largest number of smokers in the world – over 300 million smokers – and consumes one third of global production of cigarettes. Almost 60% of Chinese, smoking an average of fewer than 15 cigarettes per day.

In questo pianeta, ovunque è presente l’uomo, inevitabilmente si trovano mozziconi di sigarette lungo le strade, sui marciapiedi e soprattutto sulle spiagge. Ogni anno, circa .4500 miliardi di cicche sono sparse nell’ambiente. I mozziconi di sigarette in grado di sopravvivere in mare fino a 15 anni, contengono sostanze chimiche che sono tossiche per molte specie di pesce.
In Cina non mancano di certo i mozziconi di sigaretta, i cinesi fumano un terzo delle sigarette consumate nel mondo.
Gli scienziati hanno scoperto che immergendo i mozziconi di sigaretta in acqua sono stati in grado di estrarre nove differenti composti chimici, tra cui la nicotina.
Il composto chimico quando è stato applicato come vernice ad un tipo d’acciaio ampiamente utilizzato nel settore petrolifero, ha dimostrato d’essere molto efficace nel prevenire la corrosione anche in condizioni difficili.
