UK company Affresol offers a truly novel building material called Thermo Poly Rock (TPR), which is made from select waste products. The resulting material is stronger than concrete, is waterproof, fire retardant, and can be used to build low-cost modular housing. Each house built with TPR panels will save an average of 18 tons of waste material from being disposed of in landfills.
Ian McPherson, Affresol managing director, says:
“Every country in the world has issues with waste and we now have an opportunity to turn waste into an enduring housing resource that is 100% recyclable.”
TPR is cold-produced from waste products mixed with resin and polymers which can then be poured into molds like concrete.. Once cured, the company says that TPR offers great thermal insulation, is not subject to insect infestation or rot, does not leach any dangerous chemicals, and is 100% recyclable.
According to Affresol, houses built with TPR panels also cost less than traditional building methods.
In addition to being environmentally friendly, the Affresol house is targeted to lower income families, offering “a real and cost effective opportunity to the thousands of people who are currently unable to get onto the first rung of the housing ladder”.

L’azienda inglese UK Affresol ha inventato un materiale da costruzione veramente incredibile, il Thermo Poli Rock (TPR), fatto con materiale di scarto selezionato. Il materiale riciclato è più forte del cemento, è impermeabile, ignifugo e può essere utilizzato per costruire alloggi modulari a basso costo. Ogni casa costruita con pannelli in TPR farà risparmiare il costo di smaltimento di una media di 18 tonnellate di rifiuti in discarica.

“Ogni paese del mondo ha problemi con lo smaltimento dei rifiuti, ora abbiamo l’opportunità di trasformare i rifiuti in una risorsa abitativa duratura, riciclabile al 100%”.
Affresol TPR è prodotto con materiale di scarto miscelato con resine e polimeri che possono poi essere versati in stampi come il calcestruzzo. La società dice che una volta indurita, il TPR diventa materiale idoneo per l’isolamento termico, non è soggetto ad infestazioni d’insetti o di muffa, non fa filtrare sostanze chimiche pericolose, ed è riciclabile al 100%.
La società precisa inoltre che i pannelli TPR hanno caratteristiche di flessibilità, possono essere prodotti in diversi gradi di spessore secondo l’uso finale.
I pannelli TPR sono imperniabili, possono essere utilizzati per costruire le case, risparmiando grandi quantità di legname.
I pannelli stampati in fabbrica, trasportati nell’area dove sorgerà l’edificio, consente di velocizzare il processo di costruzione (meno di una settimana di lavoro per costruire l’intera struttura).
Affresol sottolinea che le case costruite con i pannelli in TPR, oltre ad essere rispettose dell’ambiente, costano meno di quelle costruite con i metodi tradizionali, offrono alle famiglie a basso reddito la reale possibilità di avere finalmente una casa”.
